The basics of short sleeved shirts and shirt yokes

Short Sleeve Dress Shirts

Short sleeve dress shirts is actually a detail of men’s dress shirts that most people do consider significantly, however deciding whether your dress shirt should be short or long sleeved is just the beginning.

For example, did you know that wearing a tie with short sleeve dress shirts is often seen as a ‘no no’ by the majority of fashion minded people?  Give it some thought, especially if you consider using short sleeve dress shirts for work… you might have to go ‘tieless’.

Something else to consider is the ending of short sleeve dress shirts or as we call it the short sleeve cuff. There are a few options here, but the two main ones being the turn up stitching and the single top stitching. Turn up stitching is the formal of the two while single top stitching is seen as more modern.

Some companies let you change fabric on the short sleeve endings, which may give a cooler look.

Slim fit dress shirts in a short sleeve version is also quite popular for the more athletic crowd.

The Shirt Yoke – How It Can Add Style

The shirt yoke is the part of the shirt on your upper back between your shoulders. If the shirt yoke of a dress shirt has been given design attention it is a good sign that the rest of the dress shirt is well crafted.

There are two common types of shirt yokes for dress shirts, the first one being the most common where the shirt yoke is made of a single fabric. One of these is when the shirt yoke is split at the middle dividing it into two equal parts. This is named a mitered or split yoke which is often a sign of good quality workmanship.

The traditional not-split yoke is also a good option, but with the split yoke your fit can be improved. Assuming that the shirt maker knows what he is doing, the divided fabric on the yoke will result in a shirt that has a more natural drape along your back.

In addition to that, the split yoke also has a design effect when striped or checkered fabrics are used. With split yokes the pattern should be aligned giving another look to the back of the dress.
